My paintings explore transience, memory and the passage of time. Cyclical occurrencess that repeat in nature are of particular interest.
Expressive, colourful paintings are created up by layering transparent veils of colour. Each layer allows a moment in time to be captured. Spontaneous passages of paint are removed, leaving a trace of what once was. This process of veiling and unveiling evolves, so that depth becomes part of the work. Depth and surface then work together to establish a relationship with presence and absence.
I respond physically and visually to the material properties and chance events occurring before me. Oil paint is my ideal medium, as it offers the greatest potential. Rather than paint a factual reality, I attempt to give rise to something between nature and reality.
